NBC Buys Out Microsoft's MSNBC Share - TheTechN
We all knew that it was bound to happen, but now it’s official. — Microsoft is out of the cable news business.
Back in 1996, NBC and Microsoft partnered to launch the co-branded news organisation MSNBC, and the MSNBC site became the central hub for all of NBC’s online digital news platform. However, it seems as if the 15 year cooperation didn’t work out too well, after a press release from this morning revealed that NBC bought out Microsoft’s 50 percent stake in the brand as of last Friday. Their website, MSNBC.com, has now been rebranded into NBCNews.com, and although it will remain mostly the same as it is currently, we’ll see a lot more integration of local news from NBC’s affiliates around the country.
The current plans call for everything to remain the same until a date in 2013 which is currently unknown, and it’s only then we’ll see the launch of a new digital home for all of the various properties.
Should NBC have bought out Microsoft? Let me know what you think below.
